NEUROSYPHILIS -- Clinical Case Treated with Penicillin F.P.S., Age 66, ex-soldier; at age 17, had two chancres with suppurating inguinal adenitis; he had no treatment nor luetic tests; his wife had healthy children and a miscarriage of 6 months; they never presented any manifestations of syphilis.Because for the last 10 years he had vision difficulties with senile cataract, without presenting any other symptoms, the syphilis tests were performed. January 25, 1952. Reaction of ReinBossak (method of exclusion of Klein in cardiolipin): Direct Positive, Reaction of Mazzini: Direct Positive, Reaction of M.R.M. quantitative (microscopic with antigen of Kahn) 128 units dil. They applied 6,000,000 Units of penicillin procaine to him in monostearate of aluminum: 6,000,000 Units every third day. On April 8, the syphilis tests were: All Direct Positive and 64 units dil: Again they prescribed to him 12,000,000 Units of the same penicillin applied in the same manner: On July 11, 1952 the result was: All Direct Positive and 64 units dil. Diagnosis: Asymptomatic Syphilis Tarda or Serologic Syphilis with senile cataract. The previous result is very similar to the ones obtained in the great majority of patients treated by the North American system during 3 years of daily observation. CONCLUSIONS: There is nothing advantageous, from the therapeutic point of view, in using such a comfortable and inoffensive medication, which does not achieve a true cure, not only from a serological but also from a clinical point of view.
PATIENTS OF AUSTIN STATE HOSPITAL -- Eight clinical cases By invitation of Dr. Chas W. Castner, Cellular Therapy was applied to several patients with Quadriplegic Dementia (General Paralysis of the Insane) in Austin State Hospital, whose main interest, held by Dr. Castner as the director, and other doctors of that hospital, was to see that the reactions of the Cerebrospinal fluid became negative, since the treatments in use in that Hospital consisted of the application of diverse forms of fevers, with which they had not been able to observe remarkable serologic changes. From the most difficult and rebellious cases, the following patients were chosen:
#1. – Case number 16295. – M.W.J.: Age 28, Male, White, admitted January 15, 1937. He contracted syphilis ten years ago, the first mental symptoms appeared 3 years ago, was receiving treatments during 6 months. Remarkable speech defects, dysarthria, behaves in all his actions like a boy six years of age; tendinous reflexes with hyperreflexia. On March 24, Malaria was applied to him and from that date until October 4 they applied 17 doses of Tryparsamide, 17 doses of bismuth, and 2 doses of Neosalvarsan. Before beginning Cellular Therapy treatment, the laboratory results were: Cerebrospinal Fluid: Wassermann: 4 3 2, Lange’s Colloidal Gold: 4 4 2 2 1 0 0 0 0 0, Globulin: weak increase, Cell Count: 2. DIAGNOSIS: General Paralysis of the Insane. After 51 days, in which were applied 9 treatments of Cellular Therapy, the results were: Cerebrospinal fluid: Wassermann: 0 0 0 0 0, Lange’s Colloidal Gold: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0, Globulin: Negative, Cell Count: 2.

Similar results were obtained with many other patients, who we had begun to treat. And because of lack of time it was necessary to suspend their treatment. Meanwhile Dr. Chas W. Castner gave the following letter, directed to the most eminent doctor specializing in syphilitic mental diseases in North America, Dr. John H. Stokes.
